Open Question: If I want to run windows on an iMac, can I put a Windows OS on a External Hard drive and run it on an iMac?

I know you can now put a windows operating system on a mac computer, and the main ways to do that is to use either Boot Camp, Parallels Desktop for Mac or vmware fusion to run Windows operating systems on a Mac. I want to know if you can instead of putting the windows OS on the internal iMac hard drive, can you install the windows OS on an external hard drive and run it on your iMac? If this is possible to do then also can you use all the space on the external hard drive for the Windows OS? I want to put the Windows OS on the external hard drive I am not using(if I can), so I don't take up precious space on the internal Mac hard drive to use the Windows OS and if I can use the external I would have more space for the Windows/Mac to use....
